TENANT PROFILE: MALGAS COLLECTION

We caught up with Exchange tenant Nomsa Malgas of Malgas Collection for the first in our series of Creative Business Q&As...

Q: Tell us a bit about Malgas Collection and how it came to be.

A: Malgas Collection is a dream that became reality in 2020. It started with making sustainable masks for a living during COVID, which grew to making dresses and the label that it is now. As a young girl I could only dream of having a clothing line!

Q: If there’s one thing you would want Malgas Collection to be known for, what would it be?

A: I would love for it to be known as a brand of ethics, a brand that is sustainable, a brand that is honest and true to its course, and a brand that empowers young women to dream regardless of your reality.

Q: What has been the most standout lesson in your creative business journey so far?

A: Something that has stood out to me in my journey is that it’s okay to make mistakes. As entrepreneurs we strive for perfection, but l have created some of my favourite designs from making mistakes, so failure is actually a part of the creative process for me.

Q: How long have you been based at the Woodstock Exchange for? And what do you like most about it?

A: I have been at the Exchange for 9 months now. This was my first big business step, as l was working from home before. It’s been a great experience to have a functional studio… and l have the best view.

Q: What’s next for the business? Is there something specific that you would like to achieve in the next year?

A: In 2024 I’m looking forward to having a retail space, and with that more visibility of the brand and awareness of what we do and what we stand for. My dream is to give more young women basic sewing skills to empower them to make garments as I have done, so that is something I would love to get started.
